The 1st Syria International Exhibition of Textile Machinery
Tex Expo is the first international exhibition of its kind in Syria. It aims at bringing together hundreds of companies in textile machinery sector from Syria and all over the world in order to present the latest development in this important sector and to explore a new promising market. Obviously, Syrian industry breaks down into four main sectors that include textiles, food processing, chemicals (including pharmaceuticals) and domestic appliances. In 2000, the service industry contributed 41.1% to GDP, with manufacturing and agriculture contributing 29.2% and 26.1%, respectively. While textile in Syria represents one of the most important sectors in the country, Tex Expo is providing textile machinery manufacturers with a unique tool to explore this important and potential market. While textile in Syria represents one of the most important sectors in the country, Tex Expo is providing textile machinery manufacturers with a unique tool to explore this important and potential market.
The potential for cotton - Syria's largest cash crop - in the textile sector is considerable, as the cotton industry is responsible for linking 15% of the work force either directly or indirectly to production. This is significant since about 60% of Syria's cotton crop is exported primarily to Western European countries. Syrian garment production is diversified with textiles and clothing making up a major share of exports. In fact, several Syrian firms have recently signed co-operation agreements with European companies to adopt European fashion and technology standards. It is widely accepted that Syria's new economy must be based on foreign investment, which the Syrian government, as well as international exhibitions such as Tex Expo, are promoting by developing business co-operation between Syria and regional and international markets. It is widely understood that the future of economic reform in Syria depends on a number of factors that include adopting modern management techniques, current technology, a successful IT structure, as well as global trade connections.
