No details, CII says capital will land

2003-9-28

Hopes are high about the success of — Vibrant Gujarat — the show to bring in investments in the state, with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) already jubilant over the success of Gartexmart and Jewelmart, held in Surat. With major garment manufacturers pledging in investment for the proposed Apparel Park in Surat, the CII may just win over the case of bringing in investments.

The CII will be addressing textile and jewellery sectors for the ‘Vibrant Gujarat’ meet, whereas Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) is partnering the Government for infrastructure, oil and gas, tourism, agro and food processing industries, pharma-biotech, mines and minerals and education sectors.

‘‘Major textile houses have shown interest in Gujarat. Though we expect to get a lot of investment proposals for the garment park, there are already a few lined up,’’ said Industries Secretary Amarjeet Singh, while speaking at the curtain raiser for the Surat event of Vibrant Gujarat.

But when asked for details of proposals made by textile companies, Singh said: ‘‘We will share it only after the deals are fully firmed up. We expect more response after Gartexmart and will share details at a more finalised stage. However, most big companies have shown interest in Apparel Park.’’ Industries Minister Anil Patel said: ‘‘The government has allocated Rs 18 crore worth land in Gujarat and taken plots in Ahmedabad for Apparel Park. For infrastructure, the Centre has approved Rs 17 crore and the bidding process for space in Apparel Park has been started. Within one year the park will be operational.”

CII Gujarat Council chairman Piruz Khambatta remarked that while Gartexmart will dwell on Gujarat’s capacity to value addition, Jewelmart will look into the designing of end-products of jewellery.
