Demand for wool in the interior textile sector (for use in products such as upholstery fabric, blankets, doonas etc) was supported in 2003 by continued strength in the housing markets of the US, UK and Australia.
In the UK the early months of the year are traditionally good for sales of floorcoverings. This year reports are that March was also surprisingly strong. Sales were reportedly stronger compared to the same period last year, although prices remain static. Market research conducted in the UK during January for the Carpet and Flooring Review supports the view that shoppers for new floorcoverings are trading up, and this is benefiting wool and wool blend carpets. Respondents said that the most important factors that influenced their purchase of new floorcoverings (such as carpet, wood, laminates or vinyl) were top quality and durability. A small number of respondents nominated discounted prices as the most important factor.
