2004-7-9
Over 0.45 million bales of cotton have arrived at the onset of the arrival season, ginners said Monday. A target of 10.06 million bales has been fixed as target for the year 2003-04 on cultivation area of 2.995 million hectares.Ginning factory operators in Sindh and Punjab said though ginning had yet to be initiated, factories in both the provinces were all prepared to start operations. The Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA), which has yet to release any figures, has already designed a ginning plan. Water shortage led to delay in sowing in the major cotton producing areas, both in Sindh and Punjab also delayed picking operations of phutti. As a result lint prices may go up.Latest figures indicate that cotton was sown over 2.387 million hectares in Punjab, which produced 7.702 million bales while Sindh cultivated 2.243 million bales on the area of 0.561 hectares.
