Mumbai''s demand for Apparel Park gains support(India) |

Recently, the Textiles Minister Shankersinh Vaghela said that he would support the proposal for setting up an Apparel Park in Mumbai.
The park proposed to be set up on a defunct mill site on a 12-acre land in Parel-Lalbaug area by the Readymade Garments Association. Vaghela stated that the proposal had to be approved by the State Government.
Another reason for Centre to approve would be that the land was in use for the same purpose earlier.
Meanwhile the local Member of the Parliament, Gurudas Kamat has supported the move to establish the Apparel park project stating that Mumbai would regain its lost glory by reviving this major industry.
He said that the readymade garment industry constituted 40 percent of the total exports of the country.
Since 1980, the textile capital of India, Mumbai had saw closure of textile mills and recently, about 12 of the 25 state National Textile Corporation run mills also closed.
Jobless mill workers would now see hope in the setting up of such a park, with women also expecting to seek gainful employment opportunities |
