Wool vest protects from stabbing

2004-7-21
To protect one’s body from grievous injury like a stab wound, New Zealand researchers have developed a wool fibre to protect people against stabbing attacks.

The textiles innovation team at the wool research company Canesis produced a prototype protective vest made from a woollen mix fabric.

According to Ian McFarlane, scientist at Canesis, the stab-proof material mixes synthetic yarn with wool fibres to form an impervious fabric that has all the characteristics and wearability of wool.

He informed that the fabric was originally developed for an Australian prison.

McFarlane said that currently prototype vests were undergoing trial under various conditions to establish technical specifications.
