2004-7-23

North Carolina US textile producers have launched a major lobbying effort aimed at landing government protection from low-cost imports in Washington yesterday.

To begin with an annual meeting of the National Council of Textile Organizations was held yesterday.

According to the Group vice chairman Jim Chesnutt, issues on the table include import safeguards and details of the Central American Free Trade Agreement.

More than 100 textile executives from different parts of the country have to converge during the meetings with their legislators.

Chesnutt stated of ‘one huge concern’ about January next year, when World Trade Organization rules call for an end of export limits on virtually all textiles.

Chinese manufacturers, fear the American producers would cause 30 million textile and apparel jobs losses from other nations.

Notably, Alabama lost almost 50,000 jobs in the textile industry since 1994.
