India: Govt moots technology missions

Days of technology missions are back! The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs is expected to clear a mission on cotton during its meeting tomorrow. Cotton production and manufacture of textiles are the two problem areas identified for immediate attention. Cotton grown within the country is short-stemmed cotton which does not produce cloth of high quality. Textile mills of Gujarat and Maharashtra are mired in obsolete technology, aging and desperately need a technological upgrade. Financial issues dog most of them. In the present scenario only a technical and financial package from the government can improve the situation of the mills. With a promising immediate future in the form of textile quotas being removed from January next year, the optimism within the industry is indeed high ensuing tremendous sectoral growth.
