A research team of scientists headed by Hu Jinlian at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, has invented ‘shape memory’ fabric made from cellulose.
Shape memory fabrics can readily recover their original shape. This distinguishes shape memory garments from other wrinkle-free clothing by achieving crease retention, a flat appearance, and bagging recovery when washed in hot water.
"The unique properties of shape memory fabrics make them ideal materials for the textiles and garment industry," says Hu Jinlian, adding, "Their applications are by no means limited to the realms of pret-a-porter and haute couture."
Hu said the shape memory fabrics are finished with a special kind of polymer. It can be easily re-shaped into different sizes to serve other purposes such as medical devices, toys and even facial masks. |
