Brazil:Brazil aims to boost shoe exports |

Abicalcados, the Brazilian association of the footwear industry, anticipates growing exports for the year 2004 and announced an incentive programme to boost the international degree of awareness with regard to shoes from Brazil.
The Novo Hamburgo-based association forecasts a 15 percent export increase for Brazilian shoes as compared to the previous year. In 2003, Brazil exported as many as 188 million pairs of shoes to 120 countries all over the world and generated total sales of $1.5 bn.
Just like in 2003, the United States will remain the number one buyer in the current year with an annual import of about 100 million pairs. The UK has imported Brazilian shoes worth $105 million, an increase of 7 percent as compared to the previous year. Exports to Spain were up 85 percent to 2.5 million pairs of shoes.
Abicalcados has founded ‘Brazilian Footwear’, an export incentive programme geared to strengthening the international profile of shoes from Brazil. One part of the programme is the joint ‘Brazilian Footwear’ stall scheduled for GDS, the German footwear exhibition scheduled in Dusseldorf from 16 to 19 September 2004 that will also welcome 40 Brazilian shoe manufacturers and designers.
