Australia:Fijian garment industry gets much needed access

A seven-year preferential access to Australia has been won reprieve for the troubled garment industry of Fiji. Australia''s Prime Minister John Howard informed Pacific Island Presidents and Prime Ministers of the extension during a regional leaders'' retreat in Samoa. An Oxfam study on Fiji''s garment industry released just before the Pacific Island Forum Leaders Meeting began, warned 15-thousand people in Fiji be out of work if the garment industry lost access to Australia, as scheduled next year. Howard told the leaders the deadline has been put back by another seven years for now. Delighted Fijian Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase described the decision as "very good news for Fiji."
