Kazakhstan:Cotton export to reduce as cotton processing goes up

Kazakhstan intends to reduce by 30% the export of its cotton shortly, Prime Minister Danial Akhmetov said at a briefing in Almaty on Thursday. "The government will draft a program under which much of the raw cotton will be processed in South-Kazakhstan region. We will reduce the export of cotton by 30 %," he said. The region must make final products competitive in the world markets, Akhmetov said. South Kazakhstan region grows most of Kazakhstan''s cotton. Cotton was sown in an area of nearly 220,000 hectares in the region in 2004, 30,000 hectares more than in 2003. The region harvested 382,300 tonnes of raw cotton in 2003 compared to 360,100 tonnes in 2002. Kazakhstan exports much of its raw cotton.
