Uganda:Tri-Star signs $10m deal with Sunquest Apparels

2004-9-15

A $10mn worth apparel deal has been signed between Apparel Tri-Star (U) Limited and a US firm, Sunquest Apparel, informed Yokoramu Katwiremu, the Special Presidential Assistant on AGOA.

“Sunquest Apparel has signed an agreement with Tri-Star in which the latter will supply apparel worth $10m under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) this year,” Katwiremu said.

He said the US firm had promised to build a weaving and spinning plant in Uganda to facilitate making of apparel using locally-grown cotton.

Katwiremu said since the inception of AGOA, apparel and garment exports to the US had increased to $2.8m in December 2003 from $0.3m in December 2002.

"Uganda goes on record as a great force in the opening up of the US market under AGOA. We have not fully utilised the free trading opportunity before us, because a country like Lesotho exported apparel worth $300m in 2003," he said.

Katwiremu said Uganda’s greatest challenge was integrating the cotton-growing sector with the fabric and apparel making sectors.

He urged the Government to set up a robust apparel sector to increase garment and textile exports.

Katwiremu told farmers to diversify and increase production because the US market can accommodate 4,650 products while AGOA’s capacity is 1,800 new products.
