The Bush administration has been asked to immediately self-initiate safeguards on textiles and apparel products coming from China before the elimination of textile quotas Jan 1, 2005, by members of the National Textile Association (NTA).
After deliberating on the issue at their recent annual meeting, the NTA members voted on the above issue to ask the Bush administration to act immediately on their demand.
“If the administration is serious about doing anything to help the 700,000 textile and apparel workers in North Carolina, South Carolina and throughout the country, it would send a powerful message to the Chinese if the U.S. Committee for the Implementation of Textile Agreements were to self-initiate safeguard cases,” said NTA Chairman Jonathan Stevens.
The group, which includes weavers, knitters and yarn manufacturers said the safeguards, which limit the growth in imports from China, were agreed to by China in the U.S.-China bilateral textile agreement of 1997 and incorporated into China’s accession to the World Trade Organization. |
