USA:‘Troublesome’ September flattens footwear retail sales

Footwear retailers’ had to literally brave hurricanes and slow back to school sales that reported flat September same-store sales results in the ultimate analysis.

Figures released by Evansville, Ind.-based retailer Shoe Carnival Thursday showed comps dropped 1.9 percent during September as a result of hurricanes and flooding in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic states. The total sales for the month however rose 4.2 percent, to $46.3 million from $44.4 million compared with the same period in ’03.

Brown Shoe Co.’s Famous Footwear chain recorded same-store sales gains of 4.7 percent for the month, while combined comps for August and September were off 1.3 percent.

Brown Shoe Chairman and CEO Ron Fromm said, “The back-to-school season started late for Famous Footwear,” in a statement. September sales at the St. Louis-based chain rose 8.9 percent to $104 million compared to $95.5 million a year ago.

Payless ShoeSource saw comps drop 6.5 percent for the month, with total sales down 7.1 percent to $250.2 million from $269.5 million.

Pacific Sunwear of California, turned super performance while reporting a 20.8-percent jump in total sales to $98.9 milion, compared to $81.9 million in the year-ago period. The Anaheim, Calif.-based retailer’s same-store sales increased 9.8 percent.

The Buckle came in with a reported 0.3 percent rise in comps, while the Kearney, Neb.-based retailer’s total sales for September increased 4.6 percent to $43.3 million from $41.5 million for the same period a year ago.

For the third quarter ended Oct. 2, Pinole, Calif.-based Shoe Pavilion said net revenues slid 4.2 percent to $20.7 million, compared with $21.6 million last year. For the nine months ended Oct. 2, Shoe Pavilion’s net sales fell 0.6 percent, to $61 million from $61.3 million in ’03.
