September retail sales though modest, however leapt significantly on a year-over-year basis, the US Commerce Department reported this morning.
Stores took in more than $308.6 billion during the month, a growth of 1.5 percent from August but a stunning 7.5 percent over September 2003.
Retailers specializing in a wide array of home furnishings, and those selling consumer electronics and appliances, followed the general retail trend, registering flat or even slightly negative growth from the previous month, but healthy increases over the year.
Home product stores took in more than $8.7 billion, a 3.4 percent annual growth. Electronics and appliance stores rang up nearly $8.5 billion, a yearly jump of 4.5 percent.
Only department stores, including mass merchants, dropped slightly over the year. September sales in these establishments surpassed $17.7 billion, down 1.3 percent from a year ago, but up a half percentage point since August. |
