The wonder Olyset insecticide treated nets (ITN) is capable of killing mosquitoes for a period of up to five years.
Hailed as a fundamental ingredient in war against malaria, Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa launched the nets in Ayrusha on Thirsday, November 18, 2004.
With retail price at US$ 5.50 (about T Sh 6 000) a piece, will appear in the domestic markets in December.
Arusha-based A to Z Textiles, Sumitomo Chemicals of Japan and Exxon Mobil of the US, jointly pooled in technical expertise to develop the product. The factory would expand its production capacity to 1.2 nets per annum after installation of new machinery next January.
The factory currently sells all its nets to the United Nations Children''s Fund (UNICEF), but efforts would be made to ensure that local demand was met once the nets were introduced into the local market.
Malaria is one of the most prevalent diseases in this part of the continent, and the ITN is being projected as a potent tool to protect humanity against this disease. |
