Australia:Internet insecurity causes concern for bankers
and online shoppers

2004-12-9

Survey indicates that consumers would go for online banking and purchase more products online provided online security improves, says a research firm.

A Gartner research conducted in April covering 5000 internet consumers, found that 58 percent of those who either bank, pay bills or shop online expressed security concerns. Only 17 percent said they were comfortable with the present security measures of mostly user IDs and passwords.

As per the survey, more than 73 percent of the 5000 respondents who shopped online, 47 percent performed banking operations through the internet while 45 percent paid their bills online.

The Gartner survey further revealed that three out of 5 respondents making online transactions said they would buy, invest or keep more money online with service providers who offered additional security, such as challenge-response options where they would have to answer a personal question after submitting a password before they are allowed to do banking or buy a product. Slower transactions on account of beefed up security was not a bother at all for them, said the Gartner survey.

It said only 19 percent of the respondents making internet transactions would spend more without given a choice, and 21 percent said they wouldn''t open their wallets any wider, despite added security.

To make service providers legally responsible for strict security measures found favor with majority of consumers as the most favored security solution. The second one informed the survey, was the challenge-response option.

Use of smartcards for online account access was disliked by most indicating low inconvenience tolerance levels among the sample audience surveyed.
