Canada:Textile closures may lead to $25 million
losses for Huntingdon, Quebec

It will be ‘Black Friday’ for 250 employees at Huntingdon Mills which announced Monday of permanent closure due to lack of business. In another move, Cleyn & Tinker owing five plants employing about 600, will move out their production to North Carolina in April. Stating that the closures meant loss worth $25 million for the town, Huntingdon mayor Stephane Gendron called for immediate assistance from Ottawa. The factories couldn''t compete with international manufacturers, according to Yves Nadeau, who represents workers at Cleyn & Tinker. Offering valuable inputs, Nadeau adds, "You can''t compete with China, where they work [for a salary of] around 28 cents an hour to $2. I mean you''ll never compete.”
