Japan:Kuraray’s new synthetic textile offers relief
to dermatitis sufferers

2004-12-17

Here’s good news from Textile maker Kuraray Co. for sufferers of atopic dermatitis. The company has developed a new synthetic textile that is less irritating and takes care of other itchy skin problems.

Research estimates over 10 million people suffering from atopic dermatitis in Japan alone. Toshiaki Saida, a professor at Shinshu University''s School of Medicine, tested the new cloth in the summer of 2003 and winter of 2004.

During the tests, atopic dermatitis patients wore pajamas and undershirts made from the fabric for four weeks. Of the 26 patients, 19 experienced less itchy in the clothes while the rest felt no improvement nor did their symptoms worsened.

This new synthetic fabric absorbs and releases heat and water almost twice as fast as existing polyesters, preventing wearers from becoming too warm and sweating, informed Kuraray employees.

The fabric is made of fibers having a polyester core, coated with a material in a newly developed molecular structure produced at costs 20 to 30 percent higher than those of ordinary textiles.

Announcing next year plans, Kuraray will sell underwear and bedding made of the new cloth in fiscal 2005.
