Fiji:Ministry to hold talks with Australia in 2005

2004-12-22

Officials of Fiji’s foreign affairs are expecting to hold talks with Australian officials during early 2005 on issues related to trade agreement affecting the textile, clothing and footwear industry, whose exports are mainly to Australia and the US.

Isikeli Mataitoga, the Chief Executive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says they hope the talks will be held early in 2005 in order to narrow down some of these issues. He says Australia will initially fund a structural adjustment package which Fiji will want to ensure that it protects the textiles, clothing and footwear industry for the long term.

The United States have said that they will not renew a quota trade agreement with Fiji, that finishes at the end of this month.

"We are looking at the market situation in two distinct ways. The US market is special and one of the reasons why the Government has prioritized it and the therefore I explained the reason why the Minister for Foreign Affairs was in Washington to try and find an alternative arrangement to the end of the quota and to find ways we can soften any likely negative developments on our markets in the US," says Mataitoga
