Germany:TextilWirtschaft ranks leading clothing
and textile suppliers of Europe

German sporting goods giant with a turnover of €2.2 billion Adidas-Salomon AG is the number one of the top 123 clothing manufacturers in Europe, which have combined sales of €44 billion, the yearly ranking from German fashion and textile magazine TextilWirtschaft shows.

Adidas-Salomon is followed by Italian fashion company Benetton, which has annual sales of €1.9 billion and French luxury conglomerate LVMH with sales of €1.7 billion.

Marzotto, the Italian clothing and textile group takes fourth place with sales of €1.5 billion only narrowly before German fashion retailer Esprit, which has annual sales of €1.4 billion.

Italian fashion house Dolce & Gabbana, the fastest growing company in Europe, reported growth of 79.5 percent followed by German sporting goods company Puma, which saw sales increase by 41.3 percent and US surfwear specialist Quiksilver, which grew 36.6 percent.

German clothing company Primera and Italian clothing company Terranova both increased sales by 34.8 percent.

Germany still accounts for the lion''s part of the clothing market in Europe with €14 billion, or 32.5 percent of total sales. Italy is in second place with €13.7 billion, or 31 percent of sales followed by France with sales of €6.5 billion, or 15 percent of total sales and the UK with sales of €2.6 billion and a 6 percent slice of the market.

German Daun & Cie group, the number one textiles producer in Europe, with sales of €1.6 billion followed by Swiss underwear maker Triumph with sales of €1.5 billion. British thread manufacturer Coats has annual sales of €1.4 billion and Turkish textiles and clothing maker Sahinler Holding has sales of €1.1 billion.

In general, the textiles industry is hurt by declining sales and the trend towards consolidation or specialisation. The sales figures of all companies are based on 2003 data.
