Taiwan:Wool processing activities gets better in Q3 |

Wool textile industry of Taiwan has reported a second successive third quarterly improvement in processing activity.
The industry, which is primarily export orientated, had been experiencing a downward trend in its wool fibre purchases mainly grease wool from the Australia, the 4th largest customer for Taiwan. From first quarter to third quarter period of 2004, greasy wool imports were moderately higher.
Even though with the quarterly improvement in processing activity, this represents a decline of 50 percent compared with the volume imported during January-September 2000. Over the same time period, wool top exports also fell significantly as a consequence of fewer shipments to Japan and Korea.
A combination of factors such as sourcing of wool top from other low-cost suppliers such as China and a downfall in domestic worsted spinning capability in Japan and Korea, contributed to Taiwan''s declining wool top exports.
However, China''s wool industry has been fairly busy itself this year and has helped raise Taiwan''s top exports.
In spite of a reduction in wool top exports to Japan and other destinations overall exports are higher. With the level of greasy wool imports quite strong in third quarter it is anticipated that the improved trend in wool top exports will continue into fourth quarter despite some general economic concerns. |
