Italy:Menswear sales up 0.6% to €7.4bn in 2004,

Textiles association Sistema Moda Italia (SMI) revealed in the run-up to Italian fashion menswear event Pitti Immagine Uomo, which kicks off 12 January 2005, that menswear sales recovered last year on increased demand.
The Milan-based Sistema Moda reported preliminary figures for 2004 that show a 0.6 percent rise in menswear sales to €7.4 billion.
The first eight months of 2004 show a recovery for exports of clothing and ties, which increased by 1.6 percent and 0.5 percent respectively, while knitwear exports were down 2.3 percent and the niche leatherwear and shirt sectors continued to be still hard hit, the association informed.
Spain and Greece were the only markets showing positive developments.
Exports to Germany were down 14.6 percent, declined by 5.2 percent to the UK, by 6 percent to the US and by 10 percent to Japan. Russia, with a 30.8 percent rise in imports from Italy, proves to be an important export market.
Menswear imports continued to grow in the eight-month period with input from China up 19.8 percent. At the end of August, China accounted for 17 percent of total menswear imports into Italy. Menswear imports from Romania fell 10 percent.
