Bangladesh:BEPZA exports surge beyond target by $40.48m

Exceeding the export target by US $40.48 million, the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) enterprises dispatched goods worth US dollar 740.48 million in the first half of the current fiscal (July-Dec 04).

Companies from 28 countries, including Bangladesh, have set up industries to produce readymade garments and accessories, textile goods, terry towel, knitting and other textile items, caps, tent, electronics and electrical goods, agro products, footwear and leather, metal and plastic products, paper products, fishing reels and golf and rope in the EPZs.

Of the total earnings in July-December 04, Chittagong EPZ earned $377.70 million, Dhaka EPZ -$355.68 million, Comilla EPZ - $5.06 million and Mongla EPZ about $2.04 million.

The export target of the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority for the current fiscal was fixed at $1400 million dollar, while exports by its units in the last fiscal stood at $1,353 million, according to BEPZA sources.

During the last six months, EPZs received new investment proposals worth US $44.91 million in last six months as follows: Chittagong EPZ - $13.26 million, Dhaka EPZ - $19.18 million, Comilla EPZ - $11.27 million, Mongla EPZ - $120,000 and Uttara EPZ - $450,000.

Besides, investment in 210 operating industrial units of the EPZs rose to $793.40 million, with total 120 units at Chittagong EPZ, 75 at Dhaka EPZ, seven at Comilla EPZ, seven at Mongla EPZ and one at Uttara EPZ.

BEPZA sanctioned 26 new industrial units during the last six months with a proposed investment of $68.650 million that would generate employment scopes for about 16,189 Bangladeshi and 138 foreign nationals.

Out of these units, eight are 100 percent foreign owned, seven under joint venture and 11 are fully Bangladesh owned. Among these units, six will be set up at Chittagong EPZ, seven at Dhaka, five at Mongla, seven at Comilla and one at Ishwardi EPZ. BEPZA has so far sanctioned 64 industries for four new EPZs namely,26 at Comilla, 23 at Mongla, nine at Ishwardi and six at Uttara EPZs.

Among them, 15 have already started exporting goods and 49 are under various stages of implementation.

Interestingly, BEPZA created employment 10,163 job opportunities during the past six months with 5,427 in Chittagong EPZ, 5047 in Dhaka EPZ and 253 in Comilla EPZ. At present 1,49,149 Bangladesh nationals are working in EPZs.
