USA:IconNicholson deems RFID better over EAS |

With major retailers, the world over mulling over the prospects of deploying RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), have more reason to cheer as systems developer IconNicholson says RFID scores over the currently available electronic article surveillance systems (EAS).
According to the company, one of its clients – a clothing retailer has found EAS system functioning about 84 percent of the time while RFID system worked in the mid 90s on percentage range. And more importantly, the return on investment factor works in favor of RFID. The tags will be deployed at the retailer’s garment manufacturer’s warehouse this year.
Another cost advantage discovered by a New York City-based firm informed that an EAS tag normally costs about 4 cents less than a UHF RFID tag, priced at about 28 cents a tag for bulk purchase volume of 200,000. This 4 cent difference per tag was not much when it was found that EAS tags had lifespan usage of 8 to 30 times leading to their replacements. As against this, RFID tags outlived all life span counts.
Further, labor costs also weigh heavily in RFID’s side as it requires to be embedded on products directly.
Prada, a leading fashion house has deployed RFID systems at its stores by IconNicholson.
At the National Retail Foundation’s upcoming show at New York being held during January 17-18, 2005, IconNicholson RFID applications in action as part of the X05 Real Store RFID display. During the event tags will be fitted on four products like CDs, T-Shirts, Figurines and Books.
Among the other products on demonstration will be IconNicholson’s RFID attendee-tracking system will be put to test online, during the event. |
