views on Budget 2005-06

2005-3-4

Major thrust of the Budget 2005-06 was generating jobs in the textile sector to the tune of 1.2 crore in the coming five years, according to Union Textiles Minister Mr Shankersinh Vaghela.

In an television interview yesterday, Mr Vaghela said that the Cotton Corporation of India would continue purchasing cotton from farmers at the prescribed minimum support price.

He mentioned that the Maharashtra Government was facing problems due to cotton subsidies under the Cotton Monopoly Procurement Scheme worth Rs 2000 to Rs 2500 crores, and the Central Government was offering loans worth Rs 250 to 300 crores for the same.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh today, sought guidelines from the party on how to the twin issues of progress on cotton procurement and free power to farmers. The move is said to steer clear of any further controversies.

Mr Vaghela said that the Prime Minister Mr Manmohan Singh would personally monitor the Agricultural issues, including subsidies to farmers.

He said that if China was considered a model competitor, then India had to carryout reforms in power and labour sectors. He also pointed out that India would have to compete with Bangladesh, Pakistan and its Asian neighbours as the textile quotas had ended.

He added that fexible labour policies which included longer working hours and women working in night shift were being considered for Special Economic Zones.
