Pakistan:US urged to cut import duty on textiles

2005-3-8

Islamabad has urged the US to consider cut in import duty on Pakistan''s textile products in line with other countries.

This was urged by the Pakistan''s Commerce Secretary Tasneem Noorani, during his meetings with US trade officials on Feb 28. Mr Noorani was on a two day visit to the US earlier.

Pakistan''s exports are deeply affected by high rates of tariff the US imposes on textiles and apparels, the mainstay of its exports, and related trade policies that gave large number of countries an edge over Pakistan in the sector.

The commerce secretary called on Ashley Wills, Assistant United States Trade Representative (USTR) Office, at the State Department and Assistant Secretary Anthony Wayne and urged the to take immediate action on the issues, as textile trade had become extremely price sensitive after removal of quotas, and US government''s high tariffs hurt Pakistan''s business interests.

He also discussed several bilateral trade issues between the two countries, particularly to provide a level playing field to Pakistan and attract increase in foreign investment.

According to the announcement, the senior officials of the two countries would meet again in April or May 2005 to finalise such arrangements for Pakistan under the Trade and Investment consultations.
