USA:Polypropylene, PVC, nylon resins prices moving up

2005-3-22

The past few weeks have seen a continuous rise in the Polypropylene (PP), Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) and Nylon prices for North America.

The global crude markets have seen price breech of $55 per barrel in recent weeks, as a consequence, the raw material prices remained high with a relatively stable demand for petrochemicals.

However, January witnessed slow down in the demand of PP compared with late 2004, but propylene monomer prices shooting up assisted helped part of a price rise succeed.

During 2004, price rise in PP recorded almost 7 percent rise in the US and Canada with domestic demand showing a jump of nearly 6 percent. PVC prices rose at an average of 3 cts/lb since Dec 2004.

Producers are still trying to get a remaining January 1, cent in Feb and a 2 cts/lb rise is on the table for March 1, US/Canadian domestic PVC sales were up nearly 7 percent in Jan-Nov 2004.

Nylon prices pegged up slightly up by 5 cts/lb in fourth quarter last year, but analysts say it will remain put for some more time, as a dampening North American automotive market kept US and Canadian demand almost stagnant in 2004.

Finally, the nylon market growth overall for in Jan-Nov 2004 was not even 1 percent.
