Qatar:QAPCO to de-bottleneck low-density polyethylene
and ethylene production

2005-4-5

A leading Ethylene and LDPE manufacturer company Qatar Petrochemical plans to boost pro-duction of low-density polyeth-ylene and ethylene by initiating a major de-bottlenecking.

Currently, QAPCO is the largest producer of low-density Polyethylene (LDPE) in the Middle East with an annual capacity of 360,000MT.

Consumed by plastic indus-tries world-wide, the QAPCO LDPE is being marketed in the Middle East, Southeast Asia and the Far East under the Lotrene brand name.

The company is also stepping up the annual ethylene produc-tion capacity to 700KT, said QAPCO general manager, Hamad Rashid al-Mohannadi.

Due to its high purity ethylene has become the ideal feedstock for LDPE and other down-stream petrochemical products.

In association with Atofina SA, an affiliate of the TotalFinaElf, QAPCO is planning a JV – Qatofin – with a view to participating in the Ras Laffan Petmchemical project (Q-Chem II).

The project envisages a polyeth-ylene plant (LLDPE) with an ini-tial capacity of 400KT. The ethyl-ene feedstock would be received from de Ras Laffan cracker unit, he said an Wednesday.

Mohannadi said on top of QAPCO agenda is achieving a quality certification of ISO 14001 for environment man-agement and protection.

“We consider our environ-ment a irreplaceable treasure. Hence we have set our produc-tion and operational systems to the highest standards of envi-ronmental friendliness,” the QAPCO general manager said.

Mohannadi said his company was also pursuing the strategic Qatarisation Programme chalked out by HE the Minister of Energy and Industry, Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah, under the directive of HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani. The 5- year plan aims to achieve 50% Qatarisation by 2005.

Speaking at a function on Wednesday night to honour long serving employees of the company, the QAPCO chief executive expressed happiness at the Qatar Vinyl Company (Qvc) going onstream as scheduled. QAPCO has a 31.9% share in the Qvc. QAPCO is 80% owned by Qatar Petroleum and the remainder is held equally by France’s Atofina and EniChem, a unit of the Italian energy group Eni.

A large number of QAPCO executives and employees attended the function at Sheraton Doha.

QAPCO was established in 1974 as a joint multinational venture to utilise the associated and non-associated Ethane gas from petroleum production in line with the industrialization plan of the State Qatar.

QAPCO plant is situated on the seacoast with jetty facilities and exports its entire range of products worldwide. QAPCO commenced commercial production in 1981 and within a short time, was well-established in the global market due to its quality and reliability. To pursue leadership, continuous improvement, process and system orientation, involvement of the people and measurement of performance in support of our journey to achieve excellence of performance, we have re-designed our Quality Management System to comply with the requirements of ISO 9001:2000 standard, implemented it in our practice and achieved the official certification to its requirements by beginning of the year 2002.

The main products of the company are Ethylene and LDPE. Solid sulphur is generated as a by-product in the process. The required feedstock, Ethane gas, is supplied by the state-owned Qatar Petroleum (QP) for the production of Ethylene, a significant part of which is then used in the production of various grades of LDPE, marketed under the ‘LOTRENE’ brand name.
