New sports shoe technologies

2003-4-8 8:58:00
Hong Kong—Sports shoes are among the most popular types of footwear in the market, accounting for one-third of all shoes sold in the United States last year. Serious athletes, weekend runners and leisurely exercisers are buying them because they are comfortable and stylish.

Two major manufacturers, Adidas and Reebok, are promoting new design technologies said to enhance comfort and performance.

In March, Adidas introduced an updated of its ClimaCool technology designed to provide the runner with 360 degrees of dynamic ventilation, enhancing athletic performance by keeping the foot cooler. The ventilation system features holes in all parts of the shoe to let air in and out, ensuring that the foot remains dry as well as cool.

The new design technology will be used for the maker's running, tennis and basketball footwear, according to Adidas Hong Kong Ltd, a regional subsidiary of the well-known maker.

Adidas said each element of ClimaCool shoes features innovative materials that are individually breathable. The uppers are made of open-cell padding and a breathable sandwich mesh specific to the brand.

At Reebok International, the emphasis this year is also on enhancements to basketball and running shoes. The company said its new XBeam reflex technology creates a tiered design that is both visually compelling and conducive to better stability and foot cushioning.

In fact, advances in footwear design are making basketball shoes as sleek as slippers. New materials include touch durable mesh, distressed leather, corduroy and welded synthetics.

Reebok's Above The Rim line of stylish casual footwear is featuring a low-to-the-ground feel with 3-D visual appearance. The soles have a blown-rubber herringbone design that increases traction and cushioning.

Industry research shows that in the first six months of 2002, sales of basketball shoes in the United States rose 17 percent over the first half of 2001. But total sports shoe purchases grew only 1 percent.

Sports footwear accounts for 37 percent of all shoe sales in the U.S. market. Some 70 percent of purchases are in four categories: running shoes, basketball shoes, cross-training shoes and walking shoes.
