India:Cotton output to reach 200 lakh bales,
says CCI Chairman Grover |

Due to improved quality of seeds and favorable climate cotton farmers register a steep 46 percent rise in fibre yield in two crop seasons between 2002-04.
This was revealed by S C Grover, Chairman and Managing Director of the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) in his address at the recently concluded CII''s textile conference ''Comptex 2005.''
Grover informed that during 2002-2003, the per hectare yield stood at 302 kgs while it reached 394 kgs in 2003-2004. However, cotton yield in 2004-2005 touched 440 kgs.
He said that the improved yield had also led to less application of pesticides on the crop and farmers were ready to pay in cash demanding quality seeds.
Even with a 20 percent fall in price of seeded cotton this year, the total production of cotton, which breached 200 lakh bales for the successive year has helped reduce the cultivation cost for the farmers. Grover forecast that with improved quality in inputs, including seeds, the country''s raw cotton output may cross 200 lakh bales. |
