China:Chinese retailers interested in Bangladeshi apparels

2005-6-8

Chinese domestic importers may buy apparels from Bangladesh, if it offers at competitive prices. Many clothing retailers have shown their interest to associate with the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA).

BKMEA president Fazlul Hoque said, "I have received positive queries from the local retailers, who came to Bangladeshi stalls when those were being decorated. The formal inauguration will take place Monday when the Governor of Kunming will declare the annual event open.”

Xiao Boren, vice secretary general of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) state that they think that the Chinese importers would be interested in buying apparels from Bangladesh if competitive prices are offered.

Boren informed that several Bangladeshi products, such as handicrafts, jute products and carpets, are warmly welcomed in China, so that the Bangladeshi exporters might expand their business.

"We have developed special interest to do business with our regional neighbours and that Sunman had been the historic Silk Route of commerce connecting Bangladesh and China in the ancient times," he added.

A total of 1,600 booths have been erected in the fair. Of them, 20 are from India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. The ASEAN countries, including Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, are also taking part.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation is expecting that visitors from China would multiply as soon as the Chinese government declares Bangladesh an ''Approved Destination Status'' (ADS) for their citizens.

The declaration is vital since tourists need permission to go abroad and an ADS is a signal to the citizens of China that they may travel without worrying. "We are expecting more than 20,000 visitors from China in the next two years," said Mahfuzul Haque, chairman of BPC.
