India''s silk industry requests probe into dumping case of bad Chinese silk

India''s silk industry on July 5 asked the government to probe alleged dumping of damaged silk fabrics to Indian garment exporters.

In a letter to Textile Minister Shankarsinh Vaghela, Chairperson of the Indian Silk Export Promotion Council Bimal Mawandia said a specific case of 2.28 tonnes poor supply of silk fabrics with a very high moisture content and a very poor quality were imported from few Chinese suppliers in Zhejiang province.

The import of damaged Chinese silk georgette is said to have affected the business of about 12 Indian companies.

Mawandia requested the textiles ministry to intercede with the Chinese authorities through the ministry of external affairs or the government of China.

Jacob Samuel, President of the Silk Importers and Exporters Association of India, also asked the government to take initiatives to ensure that Chinese silk is not dumped in the Indian market. He also sought compensation for Indian importers, according to the Indo-Asian News Service (IANS).
