A total of 64 foreign law firms have set up their offices in Shanghai, making the city the most favoured in the Chinese mainland.
Most of the foreign law offices are from the US and Britain, of which 15 are listed in the world top 30. These offices cover a wide range of legal advice for business. In addition to providing legal services and representation for the international companies, they also offer Chinese government and state owned enterprises legal consultancy service on foreign related cases.
Since China allowed foreign law firms to open their offices a decade ago on a conditional basis, over 150 have set up their offices. Most of them are in Shanghai and Beijing.
However, due to restrictions by China's policy, these legal offices cannot employ Chinese lawyers, nor can they deal with Chinese legal cases.
