Urging the Asian textile industry to harness its advantages to withstand global competition, Union Minister of Textiles Shankersinh Vaghela said on Thursday that Asia has a strong base in raw-materials, an expanding man-made fibre industry and a large pool of technical and managerial man-power.
While delivering the inaugural address of the Asian Textile Conference which began here today, Vaghela told the delegates from Asia and Europe that the infusion of new funds could bring back the buoyancy in the textile industry.
Vaghela said that the advantages enjoyed by Asian countries needed to be dovetailed with technology upgradation and quality improvement to retain the competitive edge, leading to a quantum jump in the quality share of the Asian textile exports in the post quota regime.
Pointing at the importance of quality, prices, marketing skills, adherence to delivery schedules and work place norms, the Minister said these factors would be the bottom line of success in the post quota regime and emphasized on the need to institutionalize the inter-relationship between trade, export promotion bodies and various departments responsible for operating export promotion schemes and facilitation services.
Vaghela also expressed hope that the Conference would throw up further suggestions to pave the way for fresh initiatives at the industry level and the Government level for enhancing the growth rate and competitiveness of clothing exports sector.
Meanwhile, President of China Cotton Textile Association, Xu Wenying, who also spoke on the occasion, said that the domestic demand and reform and opening up of the economy were two principal factors behind the rapid growth in Chinese textile and apparel industry.
"The reforms of markets has brought vitality and energy to the industry. The Government capital accounted for 13 per cent of the total paid in capital of the enterprises whose sales exceeded 625,000 dollars in 2003," said Wenying. (ANI)
