China to settle anti-dumping silk issue with India

2005-12-16

Apparently faced with the prospect of anti-dumping duty being slapped by New Delhi on silk fabrics exports to India, Beijing has made a move to resolve the issue through discussions, Textile Ministry officials said here today.

"We are pushing hard so that the decision (seeking anti-dumping duty of Chinese silk imports to India) comes as fast as possible. There is also a possibility that the issue may be sorted out otherwise also (through discussions)," Joint Secretary (Silk) B P Singh said here.

He noted that the anti-dumping case is already going on before the Director General Anti-Dumping Cell, New Delhi, following the case filed by associations of silk producers and weavers in India.

"The Central Silk Board (CSB) has provided all the necessary information that was required by them (Director General Anti-Dumping Cell)," Singh said. Officials of the state-run CSB recently said there is evidence to suggest dumping of silk fabrics in India by China.

He said China has come forward to settle the issue through talks. "Dialogue is going on. It is initiated by Chinese only. We are going a little slower because our case is very strong."
