Chairman Pakistan Readymade Garments Exporters & Manufacturers Association (Prgmea) Pervez Hanif has expressed his concerns over the delay on the part of the Commerce Ministry in taking up the issue of detained category-06 shipments with the European Union (EU). In a press statement here on Tuesday, Pervez said the government should ask the European Union to extend 2000 metric tonnes out of already committed 4000 tonnes exceptional quota flexibility under the Textile Quota Management policy 2001-04 to the readymade garments for the early clearance of their detained shipments at the EU ports. He pointed out that according to the quota supervisory council only 96.74 percent out of 542,4137 pieces quota for category-06 have been utilised up to December 31, 2002 and an excess of 176,8237 pieces is still available for the export. He said large shipments of category-06 are detained at the different ports of EU states due to an over shipment of 2.88 million pieces and the exporters fear huge losses if these are not released at the earliest. Besides about one million pieces of category-06 are further in pipeline waiting for authentication in various EPB offices, he added.
