UK : Govt. urged to console grieving textile sector

2006-2-24

Textile industry is facing hard times in the UK where firms are struggling to make profits.

Increasing production costs and stiffer competition from international companies is making it difficult for the domestic firm to survive.

Government is certainly not helping by withholding loans and not providing any kind of financial support.

However, Interface Fabrics has urged the government to fund the stressed textile industry.

Paul Goodall, Managing Director, explained the situation to John Healy, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, and requested that considering the rising electricity and gas bills, the government should not cut down the funding to aid textile firms to participate in overseas fairs.

Healy was on a visit to the Interface plant at Meltham.

Interface, which has offices at Mirfield as well as its factory at Meltham Mills, won a Queen's Award for innovation last year.

Company produces fabrics for offices, schools, and cinemas as well as buses and trains.
