The California-based company Applied DNA Sciences Inc recently said that it had filed a patent application for its proprietary embedded-DNA textile marker.
The company last month revealed it had developed the markers for use on raw textile materials and finished goods in order to identify both the country of origin as well as the specific factories where a garment and/or its components were produced.
The DNA markers, which are inserted during the manufacturing process and remain embedded in the fabric or yarn for more than 100 years, also protect intellectual property, such as brands, designs and patterns, from counterfeiting and fraud.
Earlier this month, the system was chosen by the US Department of Commerce as one of three technologies as a key solution that may allow for a cost-effective textile marker system for practical use by both US textile manufacturers and the Customs Service.
