China : Footwear associations to protest Chinese shoe imports

2006-8-14
Shoemaker in Taiwan have requested the Government to levy anti-dumping duty on cheap Chinese shoe imports.

Lin Chin-hsing, Commissioner of the committee promoting the "Made in Taiwan" logo on Taiwanese footwear has been quoted in the local media stating that the footwear association and its industry members would call around 10,000 people to protest on September 29 over the issue.

After the Government of Taiwan lifted restriction on Chinese shoes in 2002, imports accounted for almost 89 percent of total for the country.

Last year, Chinese shoe imports alone accounted for 87 percent of total shoe imports of the country, while these imported variety captured 80 percent of its retail shoe markets.

Lin Chin-hsing also urged Government to increase tariff to 7.7 percent from the present 5 percent and also requested Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance and other associations to discuss the issue, at length.

Lin informed that cheap shoes from China creates unfair competition and adversely affects domestic leather footwear business.
