China : Silk export to India in first three quarters

According to the Customs statistics, China's silk export to India valued US $283.3 million from January to September, down 9.02 percent from the same period of last year with a market share of 10.11 percent.

China’s silk goods exported to India are mainly in two categories, including silk and pure silk fabrics. The total merchandise export of the two types registered $282.7 million from January-September, accounting for 99.77 percent of China’s silk products exported to India.

Situation of China’s silk products exported to India:

China exported 63.06 tons of silk products to India from January- September, 28.45 percent below the same period of last year with value amounted to $168 million, down 3.61 percent on a year- on -year basis.

India is China's largest export market for silk products, but the market share has declined. China’s export volume and export value accounted for 39.34 percent and 41.04 percent in January- September last year, but reduced to 32.28 percent and 33.8 percent in January to September this year.

From January to September, the average price of silk products exported to India reached $26.61 per kg, an increase of 34.71 percent from the same period in 2005, slightly higher than the export price in global markets on average.

The main categories of silk merchandise export to India by volume are followed by silk spinning yarn, filature silk, Douppion silk, tussah silk, twist silk, with silk spinningyarn takes more than half of the export.
 
From January to September, spinning yarn export to India stood as 3366 tons, with an amount of $88.27 million, indicating a rise of 45.95 percent and 4.3 percent, respectively, from the same time of last year. The average unit price was $26.22 per kg, increasing 39.93 percent from last year’s corresponding time. The remaining commodities experienced a sharp decrease in export volume.

Situation of silk fabrics export to India:

From January to September, silk fabrics exported to India reached 4551 meters, with an amount of $115 million, down 15.97 percent and 36.22 percent from the same time in 2005, respectively, and the average price stood at $2.52 per meter, up 31.74 percent on year-on-year basis.

From January to September, Silk export to India registered 4422 meters, with an amount of $110 million, declining 36.33 percent and 15.43 percent, respectively, over the corresponding periods last year.

Gray silk fabrics export to India accounted for 95.71 percent of total export amount of pure silk fabrics exported to India, dyed silk fabrics export only valued $4.59 million.

India remains the largest export market for China’s gray silk fabrics, but market share has declined. China’s export volume and export value accounted for 40.4 percent and 34.98 percent in last January to September, but fell to 31.15 percent and 27.69 percent in January-September this year.

From January to September, the average price of gray silk fabrics exported to India was $2.49 per meter, up 32.82 percent, but still the lowest in the major markets, and lower than the average level of China’s export price in global markets.

From January to September this year, China's silk merchandise export to India dropped mainly due to the following reasons:

The first, this year China has experienced big fluctuations in silk prices, resulting in an overall decline in merchandise export; meanwhile India is more sensitive towards price, which greatly impacted China’s export.
