China : Ancient art resurfaces

2006-11-30

Southern China was once known for its ‘Lan Yin Hua Bu’ or blue-flower-print-fabric, which was a celebrated clothing craft since the Ming dynasties.

However, as times changed, tastes of the people became more modern with easy techniques, fashionable styles for cheaper prices and least amount time and effort.

Wu Xinyuan, Nantong Cotton Museum, is, probably, the only person who is working hard to keep this ancient art alive.

His private museum is adorned with around 5000 unique blue-and-white cotton craft pieces, which earned him the UNESCO ‘master of the folk art’ title.

Qinghua University, Beijing, has planned an expo emphasizing this textile tradition, where Wu has contributed 500 exquisite artifacts.
