China : Govt urged to protect cotton growers' interests

2006-12-1

Getting into November, bumper cotton harvest news has kept coming from all the regions of the country.

Xinjiang Shihezi obtained greater harvest from the 10 million mu of colored cotton.

Average yield reached over 300 kilograms and 30,000 tons colored cotton already sold out.

Shanxi increased cotton acreage and with yield rising to a new record high, the province's production is expected to reach 120,000 tons.

According to investigation from the State Statistics Bureau, it is expected that this year the national cotton planting area is about 80 million mu (one hectare = 15 mu), about 4 million mu more than last year, an increase of 5 percent. The country’s cotton output is estimated at 6.3 million tons, an increase of 10.5 percent.

Alongwith joy, cotton harvest has also brought the expected problems.

The Cotton Market Report issued recently by the National Development and Reform Commission showed that in the backdrop of a bumper cotton market, the purchasing progress by the cautious enterprises was behind last year.

According to the Agricultural Development Bank statistics, as of the end of October this year, the new cotton procurement against the Agricultural Development Bank loan accumulated at 1.64 million tons, 6.3 percent below the same period last year.

Some experts point out that cotton harvest brings happiness, but it also brings funding problems. The government must protect the interests of cotton growers.

China is the world's largest cotton-producing country with more than 100 million farmers engaged in cotton growing. To protect the interests of these farmers and increase their income is the basic principle of the macro-control of cotton production.
