China : Ningbo textile & apparel seeks new markets

2006-12-20

Although in recent years the proportion of the textile and garment exports has been faltering, but as one of the traditional industries of Ningbo City, textile and garment enterprises are still an important force in export trade.

From January to November this year, the city's total exports of textile and apparel products mounted to US $5.759 billion, an increase of 26.7 percent over the same period last year. Among them, textile exports registered $2.147 billion, rising 34 percent, about 8.8 percent above the same period last year.

Since the beginning of this year, affected by quota restrictions of EU and US, textiles and garments exported to the two traditional major markets severely declined, at the same time ‘ Ningbo-garments’ started to move into emerging markets.

Statistics show that Ningbo’s textiles and garments exported to ASEAN, African, Latin American and other non-quota markets achieved an export growth of more than 45 percent. The rapid growth of exports to non-restricting regions leads to the overall export growth in textiles and garments.

Relevant statistics show that this year the average export price of clothing and accessories from Ningbo city has increased by about 4 percent over the same period last year. In particular, the average export price to the EU and the US has raised 10 percent, significantly higher than the increases in other markets.

But for the exports of textile and garments and other labor-intensive products, it is still a task for various enterprises to explore the ways to expand exports, increase value added products, shift from OEM to ODM and then leap to OBM.

In addition, when textile and garment products face re-imposed quantity limits in the EU and the US alongwith the adverse international environment, textile and garment enterprises should actively explore new markets to create a niche.
