China : New norms set to produce fine staple cotton

2007-8-29

In order to improve the quality of cotton by reducing the content of non-cotton fibres in it, China has formally set mandatory norms so that the commodity can attain the standard of 'fine staple cotton'.

Experts were of the opinion that the new yardsticks would help lessen traces of non-cotton fibres like chemical and hemp fibres in cotton.

Currently, Chinese cotton contains huge quantity of non-cotton fibres. For example, a ton of cotton produced in North China contains 20 grams of non-cotton fibre. This has resulted in huge losses.

Statistics reveal that a middle-size cotton textile enterprise must spend 2 million yuan annually to eliminate non-cotton fibres from cotton.

According to the new norms, cotton cannot be purchased by processing enterprises until it has been cleansed of harmful substances like metal and stones.

Again, the content of non-cotton fibre of one ton of ginned cotton must range from 0.10 gram to 0.80 gram.
