Two-tiered wool market has started emerging in Australia. Strong demand and good premiums exist for well-nourished wool types yielding in excess of 66pc, while a much lower tier has developed for any wool displaying signs of the poor season.
Drought-affected, short, weak wool with lower style and yields are in oversupply and being heavily discounted. Itochu points out that the problem with many hunger-fine clips is their high readings for coefficient of variation of fibre diameter. Finer micron wools can be used for garments that can be worn next to the skin, but if they have a CV more than 20.5, it effectively rules them out because of the comfort factor.
