Pakistan : Govt Launches Revival Programme For Cotton Sector

2003-6-26 8:33:00
The Pakistan government has adopted special steps to boost that
country’s cotton industry and market through a series of amendments.

The Pakistani government has appointed a standard committee to look into ways to increase quality cotton production, to provide better crop knowledge to growers and to upgrade grading, ginning and pressing systems to international standards.

To tackle the problem of contamination in cotton, the committee has already passed an order directing ginning and pressing factories that at the time of packing bales, jute fabrics or polythene bags should not be used. Only cotton fabric were to be used in the process.

While transporting cotton from farms to ginning factories by trucks, shippers would be required to cover trucks with only cotton fabric.
To improve quality of the raw cotton crop, Pakistan has permitted only five qualities of seeds, called CIM-446, CIM-473, CIM-482, CIM-443 and FH-901. Besides reducing varieties of seeds to five, the government has regulated the use of pesticides.

The committee will recommend a policy to enure benefits to farmers growing cotton. In 2001-02, Pakistans cotton production was 10.6 million bales from 3.1 million hectares of land.

In 2002-03, production and land area declined to 10 million bales and 2.9 million hectares respectively.

The cotton textile industry in Pakistan was famed for its production of a wide variety of cotton textiles. However the industry was not a major player in the global arena and natural fibre textile producers from India were larger producers in terms of size and turnover.
