Cotton farmers protest hike in fertiliser prices (Burkina Faso)

2011-5-19
The Burkina Faso state government has set the fertilizer prices for the current crop season at a 38 percent higher level than last year’s prices, which has incited a protest from farmers.

Cotton cultivators from western Burkina Faso, the largest producer of cotton in Africa, staged protest in two cities on May 15, against government’s move and even threatened to boycott the crop season if the government does not roll back the rise.

Over 2,000 crop cultivators staged demonstrations in Bobo Dioulasso.

The farmers are also demanding doubling of minimum cotton crop price to 500 CFA francs or $1.07 per kg. On April 25, 2011, the state government last raised the minimum price by 35 percent to 245 francs.

Burkina Faso is the 11th largest cotton producer across the globe and in 2008 harvested 226,000 metric tons of cotton.
