The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) said that, as the five clothing and apparel centres located in different parts of the nation go operational on May 27, this would provide a great boost to Taiwan’s garment industry.
“All the five centres concentrate on different aspects of the garment industry, like the Wanhua center in Taipei concentrates on creativity and innovation, and will be developed into “an incubation center for promising fashion designers,” Lin Chun-huai, an official at the MOEA’s Industrial Development Bureau said.
Similarly, the Taichung City based centre would focus on shoes and bags, while those in Yunlin counties would concentrate on socks and towels and the one in Taipei City would specialise in rapid prototyping clothing.
Further, as several garment factories are situated near these centres it would bring about a cluster effect and would even boost the competitive advantage of the centres, Lin said and added that, in Taipei City itself over 600 garment shops are situated near the Wanhua Centre.
He said that, these centres would aid in production of products with better creativity and precision, which would help the Taiwanese products to well compete the cheaply manufactured products from mainland China. The centres would improve the value proposition of Taiwanese textiles, he added.
Taiwan once was a leading global supplier of textile items, but influx of inexpensive production centres in Southeast Asia and mainland China badly hit Taiwan’s textile industry which witnessed a steep fall during 1980s.
